Our Memphis Office Is Moving Downtown!
By mid November, we hope to have completed our move to downtown Memphis at 191 Jefferson. We invite you to stop by for a visit.
Our new offices provide our attorneys and clients with great convenience and easy access to the courts. We are just one block south of the Shelby County Courthouse and other court offices. Because of the close proximity, we are able to spend more time on case development and research rather than traveling back and forth from our old office to the courts downtown. The space also allows for expansion and more meeting space.
We think you will find our new offices will make things easier for you too. We have our own small parking lot in the back of our office with free parking for our clients and guests. When we go to court, we can meet with you at our offices and walk to the courthouse. Our office is also very easy to find at the corner of Jefferson and Third.
Another important factor in this move is the fact that we have purchased this space. In the past, we have leased office space in Memphis. We want to be a part of the Memphis community and we feel this investment emphasizes our commitment to the area. We hope that this move further enhances our service to clients from all over the Mid-South.
We are excited about being in downtown Memphis, what some refer to as the heart and soul of the Mid South. It's definitely the legal hub of the Mid South.
A lot of great things are happening along the river. We have the Memphis Redbirds, Peabody Place and now the Grizzlies. Most of the best known places in Memphis - Beale Street, the Orpheum and the National Civil Rights Museum are downtown. We are glad to now be a part of that excitement and we hope when you come and visit us, you'll take time to enjoy a trolley ride along the river and all the good things downtown Memphis has to offer.
Risking Life Or Death In The Emergency Room
In emergency rooms across the country, you may find exhausted and ill-trained physicians and staff. Doctors are brought in to work extremely long shifts. These doctors may lack specialized training in emergency medicine and may have little emergency experience. Too often, inexperience and exhaustion lead to medical errors which sometimes result in death.
Cases that we see involving emergency room medical staff are startling. In one instance, a man was admitted to the emergency room following a car accident. As a result of his injuries, he required a blood transfusion during which he was given type AB positive blood even though his blood type was O positive. He died ten days later.
Stories like that are too common. We often see errors that include failure to properly diagnosis illness or injury; failure to perform or request adequate testing; failure to follow correct treatment procedures; and improper dispensing of medication. Conditions most often misdiagnosed include appendicitis, heart attacks, meningitis, fracture of the spinal column and pneumonia.
When medical mistakes occur, particularly in an emergency room situation, they can result in serious injury or loss of life. At Hill Boren, our legal team includes a lawyer who is also a medical doctor, so we have the knowledge and experience to help you and your family evaluate the potential claim.
Dr. Sherif K. Sakla graduated in 1979 from Cairo University School of Medicine in Egypt and completed his emergency medicine residency at the Charity Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. For the past eleven years, he has served as Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine at Louisiana State University school of Medicine. Dr. Sakla received a Juris Doctorate degree in 1996 from the Loyola School of Law in New Orleans. In that same year, he became a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association.

Recent Settlements
A Decatur County client was recently injured while working out of state. He fractured his neck and possibly tore the rotator cuff in his right shoulder. His injuries required some surgery. The client received over $115,000 in workers' compensation benefits in addition to his medical bills being paid and getting paid while he was under the care of the physician. Mr. Wells represented the client.
Mr. Wells also represented the children of a father that was killed in an automobile accident. The father was delivering a table to a friend. He worked for a furniture store. The friend did not pay for the table. The insurance company denied the claim saying that the furniture store did not give the father permission to deliver the table. Mr. Wells tried the case in Gibson County and obtained funeral expenses for the father and over $100,000 in workers' compensation benefits for the fathers' three children.
A Hill Boren client from Madison County was recently awarded $115,000 in workers compensation as well as permanent disability. This was a result of injuries incurred while lifting heavy equipment. This injury required two back surgeries including a fusion. Mr. Nicks represented the client.
In Hardin County, an employee of a local steel mill injured his neck and back while pushing pipe. While getting treatment for his injury, the doctors discovered carpal tunnel syndrome. He had surgery on his right arm and is now back at work. The judge awarded the injured worker over $88,500 in workers' compensation benefits. Mr. Wells represented the client.
Mr. Boren recently represented a 55-year-old woman who was a cook aboard a riverboat. The pilot of the boat struck the Paris Landing bridge. When the boat struck the bridge, Mr. Boren's client fell inside the boat and broke her hip. An orthopedic surgeon performed a partial hip replacement. Mr. Boren's client was unable to return to work due to the long hours on her feet. A Henry County jury awarded the client $220,000.
Over $120,000 was recently awarded to a Hill Boren client as a result of a work related injury. The court ruled that the client was exposed to unsafe working conditions, which caused her to fall off a walk board while roofing a house. Her injury resulted in two neck surgeries and six months off of work. Mr. Nicks represented the client.
Mr. Hill recently represented the family of a nursing home resident who suffered serious injuries as a result of neglect. The resident developed gangrene in her foot, which then became infested with maggots. She also developed a serious bed sore on her backside which became infected. These injuries eventually led to the resident's death. The parties reached a confidential settlement following the selection of the jury.
Showing Your Patriotism
The recent events in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania have made all of us reevaluate what it means to be an American. Many of us have chosen to show our patriotism by proudly displaying the American Flag. Below are some guidelines you should follow when displaying "Old Glory."
- Display the flag only between sunrise and sunset. Display at night only if the flag is illuminated.
- Do not display the flag in inclement weather.
- The blue square with stars should always be on the upper left corner when flying from a pole or hanging on a wall.
- Never allow the flag to touch the ground.
- When other flags are flown with the US flag on the same rope, the US flag should always be on top.
- When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they should be flown at equal height.
- A flag that is damaged or torn that can no longer be displayed should be respectfully burned.
- When not in use, a flag should be folded in a triangular pattern that symbolizes the hats worn by the soldiers in the American Revolution.
Be proud. Fly our flag properly!
