Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

By: Robert Hill

Our nation honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by designating the third Monday in January as a national holiday. This year Hill Boren, for the first time, closed our office to honor this great man. We decided that the holiday would not be just “another day off” but one dedicated to helping and serving the needy in our community. This is the way it should be. We have plenty of holidays that allow us to indulge ourselves. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day should be different.

Early Monday morning, a handful of Hill Boren employees, some with children in tow, prepared the daily noon meal at RIFA (Regional Interfaith Association). Later, another group of Hill Boren employees helped serve over 100 homeless and hungry men, women, and children.

Our employees then helped clean and sweep the dining room in preparation for the next meal. We also prepared 186 “weekend food packs” for children who would otherwise go hungry before school started the following Monday morning.

Our Memphis office worked all day at the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis helping thousands tour this Memphis treasure. We join many seeking to make the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday different, encouraging everyone to reach out and help others. We believe it is the way to honor Dr. King who died making life better for the poor.

Don’t Let Your Auto Accident Claim Expire

In personal injury cases such as car wrecks and motorcycle wrecks, your case will die unless appropriate action is taken within one year from the date of the wreck or negligence giving rise to the legal injury. Do not, under any circumstances, allow this date to pass or else you will be forever barred from pursuing the monetary damages that may be owed to you. Do not listen to insurance company assurances that they will deal with you on your case and that you have no need to hire an attorney. If this date passes, and you have not taken action to protect your case, there will be nothing that can be done legally to correct the mistake. What should you do if you or someone you know has a case? Have them contact us immediately to discuss the matter.

RIFA - Jackson Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On January 15 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), the employees of Hill Boren volunteered at RIFA (Regional Interfaith Association) by preparing and serving meals for many of the homeless and hungry of Jackson.

I’ve regularly collected items for RIFA, but I have never been in their building to help serve in that fashion where you can see the faces of those you serve. I think projects like that where you can go beyond donating items and donate yourself and your personal time are very rewarding.
- Amanda O'Brien, Legal Assistant

Those of us who had the privilege of cooking, serving and cleaning at RIFA were blessed by the opportunity.
- Robert Hill

I thought it was a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to the community.
- Hal Fewell, Intake Coordinator

Civil Rights Museum - Memphis Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Also on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, employees of the Memphis Hill Boren office volunteered their time at the Civil Rights Museum in downtown Memphis. They helped thousands tour the museum that pays tribute to individuals whose accomplishments depict the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement.

I truly enjoyed every minute of volunteering at the Civil Rights Museum. My kids have visited the Museum each year with our church, but unfortunately I've never gone. It was amazing to see. It was very emotional and I'm truly thankful for the Civil Rights movements and the achievements gained through the efforts and sacrifices of courageous individuals who stood by their convictions.
- Keisha Johnson, Accounts Payable

We had a blast! I truly enjoyed myself. We got a chance to meet some great people and I even got an opportunity to go on the air with a local radio station! The experience was awesome.
- Brenda Shepherd, Assistant Office Manager

The response in Memphis was great and the Civil Rights Museum personnel really appreciated our volunteering. All in all, it was a great day.
- Christopher Taylor, Hill Boren Attorney
